EfficientDynamics in the BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series Saloon comes with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies.

There’s an optimum gearshift indicator, brake energy regeneration and active aerodynamics.

BMW have also put an  Auto Start-Stop on a manual transmission BMW 520d Saloon.

The wheelbase of the BMW 5 Series is 2,968 millimetres.

The double wishbone front axle and a multi-link rear axle helps ride comfort in the 5 Series.

Models specified with Variable Damper Control (523i, 528i, 520d and 525d) or Adaptive Drive packages (535i, 550i, 530d and 535d) have the Drive Dynamic Control chassis configurator.

Drive Dynamic Control allows for fine tuning of the chassis with the choice of Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+.

The BMW 5 Series Saloon’s standard specification includes Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth telephone preparation, automatic air conditioning with two-zone control, front and rear Park Distance Control and 7-inch control display and iDrive.

There’s a raft of intelligent technology, including Park Assist automatic parking, Integral Active Steering, Head-up Display and Night Vision with pedestrian recognition which can also be specified.

In the UK the BMW 5 Series Saloon is offered with four optional equipment packages:
BMW Business Advanced Media and BMW Professional Multimedia packages include BMW Navigation, BMW ConnectedDrive – Assist and Online and Voice control. Dynamic package includes 19-inch alloy wheels, Sport seats, Anthracite headlining, Sport leather steering wheel and High-gloss exterior trim. The Visibility package includes Adaptive headlights, Xenon headlights, High-beam Assist and headlight wash. All BMW 5 Series can be fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The advantage of eight gears is a shorter reaction time, smoother changes and the ability to match the gear for any driving situation: whether trying to maximise performance or efficiency.

A further option is the new Sport Automatic derivative of the eight-speed transmission variant which allows manual selection of gears by means of shift paddles on the steering wheel. In true Formula One style the driver is able to shift gears by selecting the right paddle to change up and the left one to change down.

In the search for even greater efficiencies, the six-speed manual gearbox on the BMW 535i, BMW 525d and BMW 520d comes with dry sump lubrication, which offers significantly lower drag losses and avoids oil splash losses completely.

The BMW 5 has a raft of innovative systems and measures that allow the driver to be fully aware of his surroundings, and more able to control what is happening around him.
